Baadshah story (no spoilers)
Raj, a small-time detective, is mistaken for a CBI agent and drawn into a deadly mission to protect the Chief Minister from an assassination attempt. The 1999 Hindi action-comedy follows his chaotic efforts to save her while navigating the dangerous forces behind the plot. The tone blends thriller stakes with comic confusion as Raj tries to survive being someone he isn't.
Should you watch Baadshah?
Watch it for
- Shah Rukh Khan plays dual identities as Raj and Baadshah, a setup that fuels the film's mistaken-identity comedy.
- The Abbas-Mustan directing duo bring their trademark suspense style to a story about a detective caught in an assassination plot.
- Amrish Puri as Suraj Singh Thapar and Johny Lever as Ram Lal add star power and comic relief to the 175-minute runtime.
- The film mixes action and comedy, with a UA certificate that signals moderate thrills for a broad audience.
Skip it if
- You prefer tightly paced films; at 175 minutes, the action-comedy takes its time.
- You want a pure thriller without the comic detours that come with a bumbling detective hero.
- You are looking for a fresh take on the genre rather than a late-90s Bollywood masala entertainer.

Our verdict
Baadshah is a product of its time, pairing Shah Rukh Khan's charm with Abbas-Mustan's suspense-comedy formula. The mistaken-identity premise and a strong supporting cast make it an easy watch for fans of 90s Bollywood. Just expect a long, leisurely ride rather than a tight thriller.
