Jailer story (no spoilers)
Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer known as 'Tiger', lives a quiet life with his wife Vijayalakshmi and their family. His son Arjun, a police officer, gets entangled with an antique mafia gang led by Varman, and the situation turns dangerous. When Arjun's involvement goes wrong, Muthu is forced to return to the dark world he had left behind. The film mixes action, crime, thriller, comedy and adventure as Muthu confronts the gang to protect his family. Rajinikanth plays Muthuvel, with Vinayakan as Varman and Vasanth Ravi as Arjun. Directed by Nelson and scored by Anirudh Ravichander, Jailer runs 165 minutes and carries a UA certificate.
Should you watch Jailer?
Watch it for
- Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel 'Tiger' Pandian, a retired jailer pulled back into a violent world, with Vinayakan playing the menacing gang leader Varman.
- Director Nelson blends action, crime, thriller, comedy and adventure across a 165-minute runtime, so the tone shifts between tense confrontations and lighter moments.
- Anirudh Ravichander's music backs the film's action set pieces and dramatic beats.
- The film is the first in the Jailer Collection franchise, with Jailer 2 listed for 2026, so this sets up the story.
Skip it if
- You prefer shorter films; 165 minutes is a long sit for a single sitting.
- You want a pure thriller without comedy; Jailer mixes comedy into its crime plot.
- You dislike franchise setups; this is the first of a planned two-film series.
