Darlings story (no spoilers)
Badrunissa 'Badru' Shaikh (Alia Bhatt) lives with her mother Shamshunissa Ansari (Shefali Shah) and her volatile husband Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma), hoping he will change if he stops drinking. When Hamza's rage goes too far, Badru and her mother decide to take revenge, though their plan is clumsy and darkly comic. The film is a Hindi comedy with a UA certificate, running 134 minutes, and its tagline warns that 'violence against women is injurious to health.' Directed by Jasmeet K Reen, Darlings blends humor with a story about a woman and her mother taking on an abusive husband, and it also stars Roshan Mathew as Zulfi, Rajesh Sharma as Kasim Kasai, and Vijay Maurya as Inspector Rajaram Tawde.
Should you watch Darlings?
Watch it for
- Alia Bhatt plays Badru opposite Shefali Shah as her mother, with Vijay Varma as the volatile husband Hamza — a cast that carries the film's darkly comic tone.
- It marks Jasmeet K Reen's directorial debut, and the film mixes comedy with a revenge plot, as the tagline 'Violence against women is injurious to health' suggests.
- At 134 minutes, it's a compact watch that balances humor and tension without overstaying its welcome.
- The supporting cast includes Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Sharma, and Vijay Maurya, adding depth to the story of Badru and her mother's clumsy revenge plan.
Skip it if
- You prefer comedies without domestic violence — the film's central conflict involves an abusive husband, and the tagline directly references violence against women.
- You want a straightforward thriller; this is a comedy that leans into clumsy revenge rather than a tense, realistic procedural.
- You dislike stories that mix humor with serious subjects like domestic abuse, as the tone shifts between the two.

Our verdict
Darlings is a confident debut from Jasmeet K Reen, anchored by Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah as a mother-daughter duo plotting clumsy revenge. The comedy sits alongside a serious look at domestic abuse, so it won't suit everyone, but the cast and tight 134-minute runtime make it worth a watch. It's now streaming on Netflix in India.
