Secret Superstar story (no spoilers)
Insia Malik, a teenage singer-songwriter, lives with her mother Najma, brother Guddu, and abusive father Farookh in Vadodara. She dreams of being a singer but her father forbids it. With help from her friend Chintan Parekh, she uploads a video to YouTube wearing a burqa to hide her identity. The video goes viral, and she becomes an anonymous sensation. Music director Shakti Kumar discovers her and offers a chance to sing for a film. Insia must navigate her secret life while protecting her family from her father's violence. The film balances the joy of her musical talent with the tension of her home life, leading to a climax where she must decide whether to reveal her identity. The tone is heartfelt and dramatic, with moments of humor and warmth, anchored by Zaira Wasim's performance as Insia.
Should you watch Secret Superstar?
Watch it for
- Zaira Wasim's performance as Insia Malik anchors the film with raw vulnerability and quiet strength.
- Aamir Khan plays Shakti Kumar, a loud, self-absorbed music director whose comic energy contrasts with the film's serious themes.
- Director Advait Chandan tells a story about domestic abuse and female ambition without losing sight of hope.
- Amit Trivedi's music, including the anthem 'Main Kaun Hoon', gives Insia's journey an emotional lift.
Skip it if
- You might find the domestic abuse scenes unsettling, as they are frequent and intense.
- The 150-minute runtime can feel slow in the middle, especially if you prefer fast-paced narratives.
- If you dislike Bollywood melodrama, the film's emotional highs and lows may not appeal.

Our verdict
Secret Superstar is a heartfelt drama that tackles domestic abuse with sensitivity, powered by Zaira Wasim's compelling performance. The music and Aamir Khan's comic turn add lightness, though the long runtime and heavy themes may not suit everyone. It's a film that earns its emotional moments.
