Mohanlal made his acting debut in the unreleased film Thiranottam (1978) and had his first onscreen release as the lead antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980). He continued in antagonistic roles before establishing himself as a lead actor in comedy and action films. In 1986, he was labelled a superstar of Malayalam cinema after the success of Rajavinte Makan, in which he played an underworld don. He became a film producer with the 1990 musical hit His Highness Abdullah. His notable roles in Tamil and Bollywood films include Iruvar, directed by Mani Ratnam, and Company, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. In the 2010s and 2020s, he starred in films such as Pulimurugan (2016) as 'Puli' Murugan, Oppam (2016) as Jayaraman, Lucifer (2019) as Stephen Nedumpally, and Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021) as Kunjali Marakkar IV. He played Georgekutty in Drishyam 2 (2021) and will reprise the role in Drishyam 3 (2026). Other recent films include Malaikottai Vaaliban (2024) as the title character, Neru (2023) as Vijay Mohan, and L2: Empuraan (2025) as Stephen Nedumpally. Upcoming projects include Patriot (2026) as Col. Rahim Naik and Khalifa: The Ruler (2026) as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali. Mohanlal has won four Indian National Film Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor. In 2001, he was honoured with the Padma Shri. In 2009, he became the first actor to be given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India, and in 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala.
